Something about Nothing

Read on...

It's time to pause, observe the scene,

Stop all my huffing and puffing,

Pick up the pencil, ponder a while,

And write a little something about nothing.

"Nothing doing!" a buddy might say

When a competitor tries to surpass 'em.

"Doing nothing" is the answer you get

When "Watcha doin'?" is what you ask 'em.

"Nothing is impossible!" I've often been told,

When there's a hard task and I need to get to it.

But if nothing's so hard, then how is it so

That so many can sit there and yet not do it?

"What's on your mind?" "Nothing", I reply;

But don't think I'm trying to fool.

It's happened to me so many times before,

Especially at tests while I was still in school.

"I have nothing to say." The famous in news

Don't want to talk so oft they convey it;

But when most people have nothing to say,

They usually come right out and say it.

There's nothing to watch on TV these days,

Even though there are scores of shows.

And how can a woman have nothing to wear

With a closet that's all full of clothes?

Nothing is better than eternal happiness,

I know most people will believe me.

If the least you can get is better than nothing

Where does that actually leave me?

Nothing is bothering me I sometimes have said,

So with nothing around I need to find some stuff.

To give me some trials, and a hurdle or two,

To remove the nothing, so life won't be so rough.

In this last verse, I'll give some advice:

Be careful and act in these ways.

When nothing's around, be reverent and bow low,

For truly, nothing is sacred these days.

Divided We Stand: Holy Wars et al...

This is something I just wanted to share with all my readers. It is a thought that has been on my mind for some time now. And I believe time is ripe for this post, what with the Muzaffarabad-Srinagar and Srinagar-Muzaffarabad buses having taken off today.

1947 was the year we achieved independence. It was the year every Indian cherishes, for it brought them freedom from the Brits. It was the year every soul on the Indian soil was free in the truest sense of the word. Or was it?

Wasn't it the year brothers killed brothers, the year that saw the best of friends turn into the worst enemies for the sake of religion? Wasn't it also the year the dreaded Indo-Pak border dispute started? It was the year when trains full of dead bodies left both Lahore and Atari daily, carrying a heart-wrenching luggage of corpses - corpses of brutally murdered people, corpses of Hindus killed by Muslims and Muslims killed by Hindus. It was the year Kashmir ceased to be the paradise of the world, the jannat on earth.

Finally, the hatred seemed to have ended - on the media at least! The chaos in the minds of the alive, however, has never ended. It still burns and rages as it did in 1947, 58 years ago. And every opportunity for revenge is grabbed, from the minds of the people to the bullets in their guns. Hatred seeped into hockey and cricket stadiums, societies, families, relationships - everywhere. Three wars, numerous daily bombings, murders - they say it all. So much for Kaarvan-e-Aman!! Is winning cricket matches all we need to fuel our false and hyped egoes? Does life start and end on a 20-meter pitch, and is the falling of 10 wickets significant enough to suggest the fall of harmony as well?

The various jehadi movements in the Islamic world give an impression as if Islam makes it obligatory on its followers to wage war and solve all problems through war, and as if Islam spurns peace and believes peace will only mean the hegemony of non-Islamic forces. The media all over the world has almost equated Islam with violence. It is also highly regrettable that some militants use the term 'jehad' even for territorial disputes like Kashmir. Many militant groups in Kashmir claim to be waging 'jehad'. They often kill innocent people in and outside Kashmir for their political benefits without batting an eyelid, only to pass it off as 'jehad'.

As far as the Quran is concerned, however, the concept of 'jehad' has nothing to do with violence, not even remotely. The word 'jehad' is derived from the root 'jahada' - which means to exert, to strain, to endeavour. Similarly, the word 'juhud' means ability, power or strength and also strenuous or utmost efforts. Again, it is from this that the word 'ijtihad' has been derived, which is used for efforts to re-interpret some Islamic doctrine or creative endeavours to apply Islamic teachings to new situations. However, when the Quran uses the word 'jehad', it has religious implications; it is a struggle that is an act of worship for which Allah will reward the mujahid (the one who strives in the way of Allah). It therefore becomes a religious act performed selflessly only to please Allah and not for any vested desire. It shall not be jihad if it is for some personal interests; any trace of selfishness will disqualify it from any degree of religious merit.

In fact, to quote verse 9:24 from the holy Quran itself...

"If your fathers and your sons and your brethren and your wives and your kinfolk and the wealth you have acquired and the trade whose dullness you fear and the dwellings you love, are dearer to you than Allah and His Messenger and striving (jehad) in His way, then wait till Allah brings His command to pass. And Allah guides not the transgressing people."

It must be made clear that the Quran does permit use of violence in certain given situations but with some stringent conditions. It disapproves of any kind of aggression. Allah has fixed limits for everything, and anyone who transgresses these limits harms himself as well as the society he lives in. Adhering to these limits ensures a balanced and purposeful moral and ethical life. Allah has fixed limits for the use of violence too, to protect social life and the moral fabric. The concept of limits is very important in Islam and anyone transgressing these is condemned as having committed a sin.

Peace is fundamental to Islam. The word Islam in Arabic means establishing peace as well as to surrender to the will of Allah. It is the bounden duty of every Muslim to strive to establish peace. True 'jihad' is to strive for justice in the world.

So who will help us rebuild? Bhagwan? Allah? Manmohan? Musharraf? Thackerey? Islam? Hinduism? Jihad? The armies we have built? The nukes we have so confidently tested? Who?

On a lighter note, imagine what would have been the scenario today had we not divided on that fateful day of August in the year 1947.

1. Lesser expenditure on militial strength - more on development
2. No terrorism in Kashmir, only tourism
3. Countless innocent lives saved
4. No rivalry, no hatred, no urge to defeat, no instinct to be seen as superior than the other
5. An invincible cricket team - wot say, Australia?

But then, being united does not necessarily mean being one nation. And the situation in future need not be hopeless as we see it. After all, we need to work out a solution, and we sure are moving one step closer to it by our every measure to contain our bubbling hatred. If things work out the way we want them to, the five points I mentioned earlier would very much materialise into reality. It is really not as Utopian as it seems.

Amen...

Bidding Adieu...

"Fruit and Vegetable Award", "Living Jukebox Award", "Charlie and his Angels Award", "Bihari No. 1 Award". Surpised? Hey, don't be. What I've just written are a few of the awards we conferred on our beloved seniors on the night of 31st March, 2005. The event? A memorable farewell bash for the graduating batch of 2005.

I wouldn't want to divulge the details behind these unusual awards. After all, I still have an year left at IMI. (Snigger, snigger!!) But what I wish to convey through this special post is my feelings for those very special seniors who've influenced my life in some way or the other - however small or big the way may have been. What I'll write next may sound like a typical vote of thanks, but this is what I sincerely want to say to IMI 2005.

My first and foremost message goes out to Anshum. He has been a constant source of inspiration and a true mentor to me. His guidance and advice in the course of my summer internship interviews has been invaluable, and I do feel I owe my selection at J K Industries to Anshum in some way.

Chetan is simply confidence personified. Never before have I come across a more poised, a more commited person. Chetan knows exactly what he wants from life, and how to get it in the most virtuous of manners. I've learnt a lot from you, Chetan. The art of making presentations has been no more exemplified by any other than by you.

Vaibhav ChauhanSujoy and Girish deserve special mention. Your exemplary efforts towards the cause of the Alumni Committee are inimitable and commendable. Add to that the support you constantly showed for us juniors, and the trust and faith you placed in us. That is exactly the stuff ideal seniors are made of. True and thorough gentlemen, each one of them.

Prerna Kumari came across as a lifesaver, especially with all those brilliant notes she lent to most of her juniors. Prerna, I owe my grades in most subjects throughout the first year to you and your brilliant notes.

Arindam Moulik is the cheerful senior who taught me an extremely important lesson in life - take things as they come, and live each day for what it is worth. He once said what shall remain my guiding light throughout my life - "Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful." That is so characteristic of you, Dada.

Riddhima Goenka and Raghav have worked untiringly to ensure that the Placement Committee functions flawlessly, thereby assuring every student at IMI of a deserving and desired placement, be it for the summers or the finals. They have earned themselves the gratitude I feel for them.

Vaibhav Goel and Somnath too have been extremely helpful, be it the cause of Nimbus (hats off to you, Somnath) or letting out all secret formulae and recipes for a successful career (that was for you, Vaibhav). I am also grateful to Somnath for having trusted me with the responsibility of Nimbus in the first semester itself.

Vineet has been a ray of sunshine, bringing with him the colours of the rainbow in his every smile. All those ways you helped me overcome my blues are cherished memories to me, Vineet. You've been more a friend than a senior with that uniquely impish behaviour of yours.

Lastly, but most definitely not the least, Dipayan has been probably the best senior I've come across, and all I want to say to him is - "Thank you, Dipayan Da. Thank you for everything."

Well, that was my sentimental vote of thanks to these special seniors who have proved to each one of us that they are worth their weight in gold. I wish each of these a future that brings them all that they deserve, and more.

All the best, IMI 2005!!

Kritva 2005: A Tale of Triumph

4 am, 6 March 2005. Groups of exuberant youngsters sit in the amphitheatre, reliving every moment spent in the past two days. The night is still alive with the refrains of "Kandisa", "Ma Rewa", "Bande" and other popular numbers from the famous band Indian Ocean. Kritva 2005, the annual business extravaganza at IMI, had just drawn to a close. Yet the scene was hardly so.

The gala performance by Indian Ocean with their eclectic mix of folk, pop, reggae and jazz, had the audience spellbound and asking for more. And more they did have - what with Sherwood Forest, the DJ Nite. True to its name, the campus came alive with the merrymaking and gaeity characteristic of the nocturnal fiesta of Robin Hood and his band of merrymen.

Kritva 2005 kickstarted on 5 March, 2005 with the HR event 'Excalibur' - designed to test the capability to catapult thinking prowess into the realms of brilliance - groups that can channelise the indomitable human spirit in their unbridled quest for excellence. This was followed by the 'Guerrillas Quizzoticas' - the general quiz - a battle of wits and intellect. The stock game 'El Dorado' then commenced, promising each team their own land of riches. The last event for the day was 'D-day', the business quiz. Hosted by the great quizmaster Parnab Mukherjee, the quizzes brought out the best in each team. The day also saw a variety of informal events - 'Antakshari', 'Dumb Charades', 'Mock Rock' to name a few. And before one could think of calling it a day, it was time for the DJ Nite.

6 March dawned bright and cheerful. The day started with the Finance game 'Marco Polo', followed by the Systems game 'Kalinga' and the Marketing Game 'Aladdin's Bazaar'. Each event was an epitome of the undying spirit to fight and win, to rise above the rest, to reign supreme. Subsequently, the debate 'Empire Strikes Back' drew participants and audience in large numbers to the auditorium. The last event for the day was 'Shaolin', the Strategy game - the most important event of the fest. The informals for the day were 'Farra Game', 'Whose Line Is It Anyways?', 'T-shirt Painting Contest' and the hilarious Mock Parliament 'Khula Manch', hosted by the inimitable Ashutosh.

IMI's annual extravaganza saw the participation of management students, corporate bigwigs and alumni from across the nation. The Rock Nite was attended by a 1000-strong crowd, screaming themselves hoarse as they sang along with Indian Ocean.

Kritva 2005 has been a conquest, a triumph in the true sense, a raging success story. This reinstates the undying resolve of IMI to shine and outshine, to win over every heart, and to prove we are better than the best in the country.

I wish to end this post by extending my heartfelt congratulations to Team Kritva (including myself) - those who worked for days and nights together in an untiring strive to make Kritva 2005 the success it now is.

Excalibur: Swish or be Swished...

EXCALIBUR – The legendary sword of King Arthur of England that fought for the cause of good - good for humanity, good for the world, good for the downtrodden and the illustrious alike. True to its name, the HR event at KRITVA 2005 focuses on winning through cut-throat competition and razor-edge acumen while keeping a focus on strategic thinking and tactical teamwork.. The event is an ovation to those who have the capability to catapult their thinking prowess into the realms of brilliance - groups that can channelise the indomitable human spirit in their unbridled quest for excellence. The future of an organization hinges upon effective HR practices. This contest is a platform where teams can reveal & dissect specific HR practices in their pioneering efforts to transcend the boundaries of what they call genius.

The event shall be divided into two rounds:

Mensa Rotundus (round table in Latin, signifies brotherhood and team work)

Siege Perilous (seat on the round table for the best knight)

Since times immemorial, the round table has signified a sense of camaraderie, brotherhood and integrity in the eons of knighthood. This round of Excalibur will also focus on exciting team building exercises that will cull out the boys from the men. It shall have an exciting and challenging game that will test team skills and leadership among the participating teams, as well as the individual team members. The successful knights would then move on to the second round.

Siege Perilous is the second round - the final stage that symbolises that coveted seat on the round table at which the best knight is seated. This round will require teams to work on real-time cases, summon their highest faculties and subsequently stage a role play to present their solutions, suggestions and recommendations.
